Fire Island News Newsday (February 1, 2010) Fire Island National Seashore has been nominated for inclusion in a federal stystem that is desginated to protect marine resources by the National Park Service.  The National System of Marine Protected Areas is a program run by the Naitonal Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Department of the Interior.  Click here for the full story   Newsday (November 17, 2009) With a local state senator seeking emergency money to replenish beaches battered by the remnants of a tropical storm last weekend, the Army Corps of Engineers says environmental restrictions make it unlikely a project could begin next fall. Following a four-day storm that local officials said caused the most severe erosion of South Shore beaches since a pair of major nor'easters in 1992 and 1993, Sen. Brian Foley (D-Blue Point) on Monday asked Gov. David A. Paterson to declare a state of emergency so federal funding can be requested for rebuilding dunes and beaches.
